Teaching Algebra with Visual Patterns

Over 55% of the math on the GED covers topics in functions and algebra. This workshop will introduce participants to a method for making algebra accessible and engaging for all students by using visual patterns and connecting to what students see. We will find patterns, describe change, make predictions, then turn those predictions into expressions, equations, and generalizations. We will also learn to use formal algebraic notation, such as variables, and explore algebraic reasoning with visual patterns.

The workshop will also include an overview of the High Performance Indicators in mathematics and how to correlate them to a student's GED study guide.
